Having a recap of some features of various smartphones released in the year 2017 is what I have been doing for some couple of weeks now. I started off by reviewing top 10 phones with the best battery life, before moving to the phones with best screen and displays. Now it is time to look at the cameras. And hey! you should have it in mind that I am talking about the rear cameras alone. There may be another review before the year runs out that will focus on the front-facing shooters, but this post is specifically for the top 10 phones with best cameras in 2017.
Phones With Best Cameras in 2017: Top 10 Review
Google Pixel 2 XL / Pixel 2
The Google Pixel phones tops this list of phones with best cameras, and they have been my favourite for the second year in a row. The Google Pixel 2 and Pixel 2 XL are build upon the already great original Pixel, ditching the f/2.3 inch sensor for a smaller f/2.6 inch one. Bur this new sensors has dual pixels for faster focus.
To add to that, the Pixel 2 and 2 XL uses the 12 million phase detection agents for analyzing the depth of the scene, which creates the possibility of the inclusion of a portrait mode with just one camera.
Portraits are just one item on the list of things that makes the Pixel 2 to top the list amongst phones with best cameras in 2017. Daylight, lowlight, detail, colours, noise, you name it…it is one of the most dependable cameras you can rely on to capture superb images across all lighting conditions and scenarios.
Samsung Galaxy Note 8 / Galaxy S8
The Samsung Galaxy S8 is one of the classy and easy to recommend phone with best cameras that will take great photos regardless of what you point at it. It has one of the most competent noise reduction algorithms, coupled with a bright aperture, large sensor and OIS. This produce a class leading result in low light.
The same goes for the Samsung Galaxy Note 8. The is the first Samsung phone to come with dual camera, and it is standing the test of time. Adding a telephoto camera to the S8’s wide angle gives the Note 8 a portrait mode (Live focus, as being named by Samsung), plus some extra reach. Even though it is been placed on the sidelines when it gets dark, this telephoto shooter has proven to be superior to other competing implementations.
LG V30 / G6
After introducing the selfie feature on the V10, LG’s concept of a dual camera that is made up of a normal and ultra wide shooter was promoted to the main camera on the G5, and have since been found in way or the other in the brand’s high-end phones.
The LG V30 is no exception, and it is one of the phones with best cameras if you want extravagant perspectives or action-cam-like shots with a wide field of view. If you care less about the V30 more powerful chipset and its OLED display, the LG G6 will give you all the rest for a fraction of that price.
Apple iPhone X / iPhone 8 Plus
1x/2x is Apple’s choice and in 2017 we can see it on 2x as many phones in the company’s growing lineup as last year. Whether you choose the Apple iPhone X or the iPhone 8 Plus, you will get the same pleasing results, which includes some of the better portraits amongst phones with best cameras.
The thing you should note here is that unlike the 7th generation iPhones, this 2017 models are not waging a war on colour. If the 2016 iPhones photos are dull and lifeless, the 2017 ones are top notch. You just need to lay your hands on these 2017 iPhoines to get a better feeling of what I am saying.
Huawei Mate 10 / Mate 10 Pro
Huawei introduced the colour+monochrome dual camera setup and has been sticking to that pattern. This feature meets the needs of black and white shooters across the world. You might say that shooting black and white pictures quickly wears off and not every image looks good without colours. Yes, you have a point, and that is why the Mates colour camera is also there for you. Low-light performance is a class-leading feature too, and the two camera can work together to create an all-important blurred background portraits. This makes it to fall among the list of top 10 phones with best cameras in 2017.
HTC U11 Plus / U11
A struggling HTC yet still make top-quality cameras. If you think I am kidding, then take a look at the HTC U11 Plus and the HTC U11. The two have a perfect primary shooter, and single as it may be, it is really proficient too. It has a familiar 12MP 1/2.6 inch dual pixel sensor, a variation of which can be found on a whole bunch of phones found on this page.
At the moment, the Nokia 8 is doing just fine but yet awaiting the alleged Nokia 9. A colout+monochrome comfiguration, not unlike Huawei’s (only that the resolution here is 2x13MP) gives you some attractive shots, day and night, plus the additional options of shooting black and white for some artistic moments. Thanks to the two cameras, you can take portraits with blurred backgrounds. The Nokia 8 came seventh is my list of top 10 phones with best cameras in 2017.
Sony Xperia XZ1
Sony is for sure leading in the megapixel race, even after relegating the 23MP camera to its midrange phones, the 19MP that replaced it in the high end is still millions of pixels ahead of its competition. Having this in mind, little wonder that the Xperia XZ1 has no rival when it comes to resolving tons of details when the light is right. The phone is not awesome in the dark, but hey! there is nothing perfect in this world.
Xiaomi Mi 6
Though a little bit underrated and maybe forgotten by now, Xiaomi’s Mi 6 is another phone in the 2x zoom bandwagon. Its tele-camera brings objects closer in daylight, and steps aside in the dark, which places it in the same category as the Note 8 and iPhones. Much like them, the Xiaomi Mi 6 tries hard to separate subjects from background in it portrait mode and achieves success most of the time.
Apart from these special uses, the Mi 6 takes excellent shots in a variety of scenarios. The Mi 6 is in a pretty decent company of phones with best cameras.
Motorola Moto Z2 Play
The Motorola Moto Z2 Play is a midrange smartphone by mere looking at its specs. Looking at the camera, it has 12 million of 1.4 micron dual pixels, here behind an f/1.7 aperture lens. This is similar to some top-tier Galaxy specs. The Moto Z2 Play puts its hardware to good use and produces high quality images, both in day and night.
So if you are looking for phones with best cameras, then this top 10 list will surely make your day. As we are running closer to the end of the year, all I am wishing you folks is a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
